Stepping into 3D Website Development
Over the past few years we have seen the rise of sites incorporating 3D interfaces and graphics. While browsers were always slower than programs running natively on desktops, faster CPUs created opportunities for web creatives and developers to use 3D.
Up to a few years ago, if you wished to do real-time rendering with full textures inside a browser, you would probably have had to go with Java. But for some time now, Adobe Flash has been capable of more than decent 3D engine rendering. With Flash Player 9 and Actionscript 3, we’ve seen a substantially improved speed of execution within the player, making possible the creation of great looking 3D websites, at least in most cases.
Development of 3D websites in Flash is made easy due to a few very good 3D engines such as Papervision3D, Away3D and Sandy3D. All of them are free, and have a good number of tutorials and examples. The Flash community is always very supportive, so even if you can’t find an example, the mailing lists of these 3D engines would get you sorted out very quickly.
